J.D. Aiken letterpress copybook and letters, 1864-1865.

Letterpress copybook of C.S.A. War Department records kept by Joseph Daniel Aiken containing letters, lists, and invoices. Also inserted in the volume are three letters and six pieces of tin foil. Copybook letters from Joseph Daniel Aiken at Charleston (S.C.) are to various government agents and departments, as well as to companies associated with cotton shipping, and individuals involved with producing goods, shipping, or financing trade. Recipients of the letters include L. Heyliger at Nassau (Bahamas), N.S. Walker at Bermuda, Col. T.L. Bayne at Richmond, J.M. Sexias at Wilmington (N.C.), John Fraser & Co. [Charleston, S.C.], Erwin & Hardee at Savannah, Fraser Trenholm & Co. at Liverpool (England), T.N. Johnston at Augusta (Ga.), Allen S. Gibbes at Wilmington (N.C.), Phinizy & Clayton (Agents Produce Loan) at Augusta (Ga.), M. Hatch at Augusta (Ga.), and Adam Griffin at Macon (Ga.). The letters discuss shipments of cotton and other goods, the transfer of funds to cover payments, the problems encountered by blockade runners, the movement of troops, and the situation in Charleston (S.C.). Letters mention a blockade runner (p. 20) making port in Georgetown (S.C.) and a schooner (p. 69) sailing out of the mouth of the Combahee River. From 24 December 1864 to 6 January 1865 letters sent under Aiken's name are apparently written and signed by John Ravenel. Lists and invoices relate to blockade-running ships and to cotton. Three loose letters (1865) from L. Heyliger at Nassau (Bahamas) to Aiken at Charleston concern shipments for the Nitret Mining Bureau, the Commissary Department, and the Ordnance Bureau sent on various ships.
